Of course, I've had a much longer time to experience this, er, evolution (metamorphosis? devolution?) of classic rock bands but I've got a couple of examples that your entry reminded me of.

The first occurred in Colby, Kansas back when I was in high school. A band calling itself "The Association" played The Rusty Bucket, a local bar that was physically large and could hold a good number of people. This would have been in the late 1970s, so there was no internet, so no one could check on their legitimacy. Turned out they were imposters, capitalizing on a fading but still recognizable brand.

More recently, Little River Band played the SEMO District Fair here in Cape Girardeau, MO. None of the original members were with them. Apparently the original band had sold the name to one of the guys who'd been a replacement part way through their heyday. They were fine and I'm glad I saw them, even if I felt cheated there wasn't an Australian accent among them.
